Workshop: MOTION-REMOTE

Hild Borchgrevink & Venke Marie Sortland

4-5 November 2019

LOCAL IS GLOBAL

Have you ever wanted to experience a far-away island at the very top of the world? Here is your chance!!

DanseFestival Barents kicks off the festival 2019 by inviting you to join us on a 24 hour boat-trip combining wild arctic nature, professional input and social exchange. The trip goes from the city of Hammerfest to the island of Sørøya with the old local ferry Gamle Mårøy.

In 2019, DanseFestival Barents aims to explore the relationship between the local and the global. How does centre and periphery relate and define each other?

Sørøya (South Island, Sállan in North Sámi language) is, unexpectedly from its name, located far north, facing the Barents Sea. It is Norway’s fourth largest island and is connected to the mainland by boat only.

During the 24 hour trip, we invite artists, curators, administrators, writers and other professionals who work in the field of performance and art to engage in a multilingual workshop of collaboration, translation and discussion: How might a dance festival, and dance as a language, with its inherent knowledge of relations between movement and space, intervene and challenge our perception of centres and peripheries? Who decides the location of a centre? The workshop is run by Hild Borchgrevink and Venke Marie Sortland.

Ferries connect communities and landscapes that otherwise would be divided. Our trip will take this act of connection and the pendular movement of a ferry as its point of departure.

Gamle Mårøy is a former local ferry that has been declared a cultural heritage. In 2019 it is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Upon arrival at Sørøya we will explore the landscape, meet some of the island’s 1000 inhabitants and continue our exchange in the local school building. We spend the night at quay on board Gamle Mårøy. After a hearty breakfast the next morning, we return to Hammerfest and the opening day of the festival.
