Cultural Investment & Development of Place - ISOBAR 2019
Thursday 7 November 9:00 – 16:00, SOT bar & burger
Urban development is important for wellbeing and safety, settlement growth, business development and environmental protection. Municipalities who succeed in developing attractive and vibrant cities and towns are characterized by being active community developers, have a comprehensive and long-term focus in their work and are team players alongside residents and local business. (From the Norwegian Government website).
With this as a backdrop, DanseFestival Barents invites you to participate in this exciting one-day seminar, which is aimed at those who are working to develop thriving and sustainable local companies within their own municipalities. This day will offer new ways of thinking for those who are engaged in developing county specific strategies, and also for those who work within the tourism industries. We welcome you to an inspiring and thought provoking seminar.
We also invite artists to participate in this important dialogue about how art and artists can contribute to the local community as community developers.
How can we together create the necessary arenas and facilitate democratic meeting places in our local community? How can we better understand each other´s roles, and create good collaborative projects that are sustainable for all?

“The importance of art and culture for a new way of thinking.”
In the face of major challenges, the world has to leave the old ways of thinking and acting behind. An important part of the change seems to be a cognitive leap where tacit knowledge, intuition and creativity play key roles. This means that the attributes and working methods of art and cultural business become increasingly important.
Bjørn Eirik Olsen is presently employed as a researcher and project manager at the University of Tromsø¸, working with creative and cultural industries. From 2012 to 2019 he was Head of The Cultural Business Foundation of SpareBank 1 Nord-Norge (Kulturnæringsstiftelsen).
Bente S. Andersen is a performance artist as well as Artistic Director of Samovarteateret in Kirkenes. Andersen has been the brain behind countless art and cultural events across the borders in the north. She has worked tenaciously for art and culture to be a key element of urban development in the municipality of Sør-Varanger.

"Fordypningsrommet Fleinvær – The Arctic Hideaway"
Fleinvær - The Arctic Hideaway is located on the island of Sørvær, as part of the Fleinvær archipelago in Gildeskål municipality. Today, the unspoilt fishing village is home to nine residents, and is truly an energizing place with incredible views of Lofoten. This unusual concept has received tremendous attention from the national and international press, and was also a recipient of the Northern Norwegian Architectural Award 2016.
Håvard Lund is a highly regarded jazz musician and composer. He is also the initiator of Fleinvær - The Arctic Hideaway, an innovative project on Northern Norway's beautiful and dramatic coastline. The founder says he comes armed with a number of coincidents wrapped in self-awareness, to this years ISOBAR seminar. Some of his greatest sources of inspiration are city planner Richard Florida, community builder Roar Svenning, as well as former Festspill director Birger Carlsen. Håvard's achievements are possibly not entirely as coincidental as he claims.
