Soul'O

Liv Hanne Haugen

Friday 17 November, 20:30, Frityren, Arktisk kultursenter.

"What she has crushed to powder
Never will rise up

She goes out running
Strapping on her sandals"

The high priestess Enheduanna wrote poems on stone tablets 4,300 years ago. The poems tell of how she was thrown from the throne and down to the underworld. It is the story of overcoming the trials life throws at you, only to come out changed. Instead of asking who she is, she concludes that "I am." She challenged the dualistic way of thinking about soul and matter by insisting that matter also contains soul. To be human, is fresh goods and a constant process.

Starting from a handful of self-composed and soulful songs, and some selected movements, Liv Hanne creates a sensual and deeply penetrating solo. Her eagerness to listen to her body's signals is radical and guides her work. But how much of oneself can one tolerate? How unique can one, and do one really want to be?

When making Soul'O, it can be good to be a trio. Participating in this investigation and on stage, are guitarist and composer Alain Kawczak (FR), and electroacoustic musician and composer, Louisa Palmi (NO). The contrast in these musicians' expressions creates an ambiguous and spatial soundscape.

Liv Hanne Haugen was born in Hammerfest and grew up in Tromsø. She is  trained as a dance artist from London and Amsterdam. After that, she worked for many years in Belgium, before moving back to her hometown of Tromsø in 2009 with her Belgian husband and their two children.

From a northern perspective, she creates dance art through various collective projects and groups, as well as through her own company Haugen Produksjoner, which she runs with her sister and colleague Anne Katrine. She works interdisciplinary and cross-genre, with current topics. Her expression includes voice as well as dance, and she is a vocalist in the band LIV, which is a French-Norwegian musical collaboration. Her work tours both nationally and internationally, and is shown on both large and small stages. She also teaches, and creates space for ‘ordinary’ people to express themselves through movements.

She runs the art studio Peripheral Center together with L. Malstaf, was a festival artist during DanseFestival Barents in 2013 and has received the Government's work grant for a total of 8 years. In 2018, she became a permanent employee of the Actors' and Dancers' Alliance, and in 2022 she received Rolf Gammleng's honorary award for her work on stage.

Louisa Palmi (NO/SE) is a composer and musician from Tromsø. She composes for dance, installations and live performance. Her work is based on field recordings which she uses to create vivid and changing soundscapes with distinct textures and varied sound elements. The result is a journey through various soundscapes, where the focus is on details, movements and contrasts.

In a short time she has received positive attention for her works, which have been performed in many places throughout Europe. She has collaborated with artists such as Per Martinsen (Mental Overdrive), Arve Henriksen and dancer/choreographer Toby Kassel. In 2023, she was selected to be a Young Artist at the Festivals in Northern Norway 2023.

Alain Kawczak (FR) is a guitarist and composer. At the age of nine, he taught himself to play the guitar, before studying classical and later jazz with Professor Pierre Cullaz at the CIM in Paris. He has played with a large number of different musicians and groups, including Chilean Angèle Parra, Larry Corryel, Marc Ducret, Guillaume Perret, and has performed in clubs and festivals across large parts of Europe. He composes for the theater and arranges music for various song projects, and has released several albums. He teaches guitar in a regular basis.

He has been a permanent member of LIV since 2015, and created many compositions for the band, and has released Kemedu (2015), and HAGE (2021) both on Losen Records, with LIV.
