SISTERS FOREVER

HAUGEN PRODUKSJONER

Friday 7 November 18:00. Frityren, Arktisk kultursenter.

"It is in inequality that the seeds of conflict lie. It's when inequality comes to light that you no longer feel affirmed and experience that others want something they haven't yet got. That the demands emerge. The expectations. The performance anxiety. The misinterpretations. The breaches." (‘On yourself, you don't know anyone else’, B-M and H. Ihlen 2003).

Are you there for me?
Are you there with me?
Can I be with you without losing myself?

A struggle between connection and authenticity. We have a need to belong to the pack, but this can clash with our need to listen to our own feelings and needs. This is a lifelong tug-of-war rather than a battle that can be won once and for all. This is particularly true for sisters and other close relationships, as the family is the hotbed of self-development.

We, Anne Katrine and Liv Hanne, have been dealing with this theme all our lives. As pseudo-twins with an age difference of only 16 months, and with the company Haugen Produksjoner, which we founded together in 2003, we have been in close relationships, both privately and professionally, all our lives. The need for both community and autonomy is fundamental. The two of us experience this through a sometimes literal dance between us.Sometimes quarrelsome and painful, other times harmonious and in flow. We are constantly searching for balance. The movements are constantly changing, and the balance between an ‘I’ and a ‘we’ is always being negotiated. This has given us unique and valuable experiences, and something we have created performing arts about.

The performances Sisters (2003), and Sisters 11 years later (2014) both hit the audience very well. Sisters was performed a total of 180 times, and Sisters 11 years later also had an international impact.

Now, 22 years later, we are ready for the final and concluding part of this trilogy that spans three decades. Our last aunt, Nunna, passed away in February 2024. She was the youngest of 8 sisters who participated through film. Now only her younger brother Uncle Nils, aged 93, is still alive. The fact that all the aunts and mother are now dead is the marker for us to revisit this great theme that most people have a relationship with. We are now the oldest, and we are the ones who will carry on the legacy. What is it that we want/not want to pass on?
We have put together a team of talented and interdisciplinary artists who all live and work in Northern Norway. We're aware that we're part of an exciting and highly competent performing arts community here in the north. The fact that we use short-haul partners will not only help to reduce the burden on the environment, but also help to showcase and elevate the performing arts field we are part of here in the north. This is important to us.

In addition, we are in an exciting dialog with the psychologist sisters Ihlen, originally from Bodø, who live and work in Oslo and who also use their sisterhood actively when they train managers in communication. They will be able to participate live, but also on film.
